Top 100 Brazilian Portuguese nouns
Explore 100 Brazilian Portuguese nouns with English translations, pronunciation transcriptions, illustrations and synthesized audio. Study them here, then practise the same set in the Mnezo trainer.
How this list is selected
These are the first 100 entries in the matching Mnezo set. The order stays aligned with the trainer; it is not an exact ranking of all Brazilian speech. We do not publish a coverage percentage for this educational selection: that requires a reproducible calculation on a specified corpus. Understanding also depends on grammar, context and listening practice.
Words such as tempo, casa, gente and dia are useful for everyday topics. If you do not know an object’s name, ask como se chama isso? Then add vocabulary for the situations you need.
Gender: every noun lives with its article
Every Portuguese noun has a gender, and the cheapest way to learn it is together with the word: not “casa” but a casa, not “trabalho” but o trabalho. The default rule is simple — words in -o are masculine, words in -a are feminine. But the classic exceptions sit right inside this top 100:
- o dia (day) and o problema (problem) end in -a but are masculine — two of the most common words in the language, both exceptions;
- words in -ão have to be learned one by one: o coração (heart) and o irmão (brother) are masculine, while a mão (hand) and a razão (reason) are feminine.
The good news: gender costs one second of attention when you first meet a word — not a separate round of memorizing. Learn each noun with its article, and adjective agreement later falls into place on its own.

Here's a short, everyday story in Portuguese. Every highlighted word is a noun — and every one of them is on the list below:
De a minha toma em a minha as e eu. Depois do eu gosto de dar uma pela com um — a conversa sobre a sobre sobre os da À a minha lê um o meu vê um e a minha conta as da pelo No do eu fecho a do e penso: que ter essas na minha

In the morning my family has coffee at home: my wife, the kids, and me. After work I like to take a walk around the city with a friend — we talk about life, about money, about the week's problems. In the evening my daughter reads a book, my son watches a movie, and my mom tells the family stories over the phone. At the end of the day I close the bedroom door and think: how lucky I am to have these people in my life.

How to learn 100 nouns fast
Pictures first. Nouns are the lucky part of the vocabulary — almost every one can be drawn. In the Mnezo trainer each word comes with its own picture, so the image and the sound get stored together, which is exactly how memory holds on to things.
Spaced repetition. Mnezo schedules reviews from your answer history. It estimates an interval; it cannot know the exact moment you will forget. Start with a small batch and practise recall without hints. The time needed varies by learner.
Audio from day one. In Brazilian pronunciation cidade sounds like [siˈdadʒi] and noite like [ˈnojtʃi] — the d and t soften in ways the spelling never shows. Every noun on this list has synthesized Brazilian Portuguese audio, so your ear learns the real sound before your eye locks in a wrong guess.
