How a word sticks

A Portuguese word hides a sound you already know in English. A scene links that sound to the meaning — so the word comes back easily.

Skyscrapers grow out of a split-open sedan — the mnemonic scene for cidade

cidade

[siˈdadʒi]city
Sounds like
SEDAN

Scene: A giant SEDAN splits at the seams, skyscrapers sprouting from its body into a whole city.

O Rio é uma cidade linda.
Rio is a beautiful city.
  1. Hear it

Every word and example is voiced by Brazilians — pick a female or a male voice.

  2. Hook it

A familiar English sound-alike becomes the hook — thousands of words have one.

  3. See it

A scene ties the sound to the meaning: 4020 drawn scenes.

  4. Recall it

FSRS-6 brings the word back just as it starts to fade, and mistakes from every section wait in “My mistakes”.

A guided path — from your first word to C2

The course leads you lesson by lesson: new words, grammar, reading, listening and writing. What you've learned keeps coming back until it sticks.

QUESTIONS

The short version.

I'm a complete beginner. Where do I start?

With the A0 course: short lessons introduce your first words and phrases through pictures, sound and exercises. Choose “I’m starting from scratch” when you sign up and the first lesson opens without a placement test.

What exactly is free?

Free forever: the A0 and A1 courses, the first module of the A2 course and of CELPE-Bras Foundation, plus level A1 words, theory, exercises, reading and listening. Exams and AI-reviewed writing are part of Premium. For the first 7 days after signing up all of Premium is open, no card needed. The 59 guides are open without an account.

What if I already know a topic?

Test out of it. In the A0–C2 courses every topic can be closed with its check straight away, without the lessons: pass it and the topic counts as done and the next one opens. Words, grammar, reading, books and exams are also open on their own, outside the course.

I'm not preparing for any exam. Is it for me?

Yes — that's the main use. Exams, CELPE-Bras, ENEM and supletivo sit inside the same subscription: if a goal appears later, everything is already there.

If I'm preparing for CELPE-Bras, do I get the rest too?

All of it. There are no per-goal plans: one subscription opens every course, book, exam and prep track. You can change your goal anytime without losing progress.

Is the AI writing feedback serious?

Your text is reviewed against the exam criteria: a level with the reasons, mistakes with explanations and what to review. It's learning feedback, not an official examiner's decision — practice scores don't replace CELPE-Bras or ENEM.

Supletivo and ENEM aren't language exams. Why are they here?

Because you take them in Portuguese. We cover both the subjects — 13 supletivo subjects and the four ENEM areas — and the language they're written in: terms are learned with the same cards as ordinary words.

Can I study without sound — say, on the subway?

Yes. Under every sound or microphone exercise there is a “Can't listen now” (or “Can't speak now”) button: exercises of that kind are skipped for the next 15 minutes, and a skip never counts as a mistake.

Is Mnezo enough to start speaking?

For vocabulary, listening, reading and writing — yes. We don't replace a conversation with a real person, but a lack of words is usually what holds that conversation back. Drills include pronunciation with your microphone.

How is it different from Anki and Duolingo?

In Anki you build the cards yourself; here 8162 are ready — with audio and examples, and thousands of them with a sound-alike mnemonic. Unlike Duolingo, it's Brazilian Portuguese only, with a course up to C2 and preparation for real exams. And no streak guilt: skip a day and nothing burns.

Start speaking “Brazilian”.

GO DEEPER

The method and the details — no rush.

How the method works

A word with two images

A meaning picture (what it is) and a mnemonic scene (how to remember it) — your brain builds a bridge between the two. The English edition has sound-alike mnemonics for 4101 words and 4020 illustrated scenes; hint and artwork availability varies by language.

A short story

A link to something familiar-sounding: “BOB the BUTTERFLY flutters through a graceful mid-air BALLET routine” — borboleta. A mnemonic gives you a recall cue; reviews and use in sentences help reinforce the word.

Review at the right moment

Spaced repetition powered by FSRS-6 — a modern algorithm that tracks how well a word is holding and estimates when to schedule its next review.

Thirteen ways to be asked

Flashcards, picture choice, letter assembly, listening dictation, fill-in-the-blank and a few more. A word never fuses to one single phrasing, and you learn to recognize it in real text.

What CELPE-Bras is

The only official Brazilian Portuguese exam recognized by the Brazilian government: required for citizenship, universities and diploma recognition. Held twice a year (April–May and October–November); the minimum passing level is Intermediário (roughly B1).

In Mnezo it's a track of its own. The Foundation course starts from zero (28 modules, the first one free) and leads into First certificate: 40 modules, 80 writing tasks and audio for every module. Alongside: a genre workshop (26 lessons) and a written simulator with four tasks, just like the real Parte Escrita: 180 minutes, one task at a time, no going back.

What supletivo is, and why the diploma matters

Supletivo (EJA) is an adult's path to the Brazilian secondary-school certificate: without it, university, many jobs and public-sector exams stay closed. You can take it either through the national ENCCEJA or through your state's own exams.

Mnezo has a dedicated track for it: 13 subjects, 551 tasks, 78 chapters of theory and 381 term flashcards. The mock exam runs in two blocks of six subjects — just like the real sitting — and the redação essay is scored against the board's own criteria, not a soft language scale.

Exams for every level — from A1 to C2

There's no official “A1 exam” for Brazilian Portuguese, so we built our own, modeled on the European ACESSO/DEPLE/DUPLE exams plus original material. The pools hold 1214 questions, with a dedicated set for each level.

Four sections (reading, listening, grammar & vocabulary, writing), three lengths to choose from — 15, 25 or 40 questions — and a 55% pass mark. Answers are checked server-side, so peeking at the key in the browser won't work.

Who it's for

Moving to Brazil

Doctors, school for the kids, lines at the cartório — you need living everyday language, not textbook dialogues.

CELPE-Bras

Citizenship, university or diploma recognition: not a phrasebook, but confident reading and writing in the exam format.

The diploma via supletivo

For anyone living in Brazil and finishing school as an adult: the subjects, plus the language they're taught in.

Family and partner

Take part in the conversation at the table instead of smiling and nodding.

Work and remote jobs

Understand the daily stand-up and the group chat. 20–30 minutes a day — but every day.
